Common Application – Teacher Evaluation – 2008-09

If you need, you might translate these instructions for your teachers.

It would be nice if these are typed rather than handwritten. You should remind your teachers that the files cannot be saved, so they should print them when ready and keep a copy for future reference.

All  references (recommendations) should be in sealed, signed envelopes! You could see what they should look like here.

TO THE APPLICANT

An academic subject does not usually include arts and sports 🙂 However, you expect really strong references from sports / arts teachers, coaches, instructors, you might send additional recommendations.

Important privacy notive: Yes, I do waive my right to access – colleges believe that if you give up your right to access to teacher recommendations, teachers will feel free to be honest, so such recommendations are given more weight than others.

TO THE TEACHER:

If your teachers do not speak English and English teachers will help them prepare the recommendations, it might be a good idea to give the school phone number and the e-mail of the teacher who helped prepare the recommendation. If the teacher doesn’t use e-mail or not regularly, they’d better not write the e-mail address as they might receive something and delete it or see it too late.

How long have you known this student and in what context? For example:for 3 years as her Physics teacher.

What are the first words that come to your mind to describe this student? No full sentences, just adjectives, and, perhaps, nouns 🙂

List the courses you have taught this student …:  Write the course names as they are worded in the school transcript.

Ratings:

Academic achievement: you might be really talented, but you might not have achieved much. Achievement is measured with marks and awards from academic competitions. Of course, there might be some exceptions 😉

Intellectual promise: you might have a lot of this even if your academic achievement is not high.

faculty = the teachers

Integrity: honesty, high ethical standards

Reaction to setbacks: setbacks=a problem that delays or prevents progress, or makes things worse than they were – so, how you react in difficult situations, how you cope with difficulties, problems

Concern for others – are you an egotist or an altrusit? 😛

Evaluation: I have written some instructions in Bulgarian here.

And some more in Bulgarian!!!
